Application Instructions

Before you begin the application, have the following available:

1. Photocopies of your GRE, TOEFL (IELTS) scores
2. CV (or resume)
3. Have access to your transcript for GPA and number of credits
4. Contact information, including email, for three letter of recommendation writers


We STRONGLY encourage you to complete your application as soon as possible —November or December being the ideal time. It is beneficial to apply early!

Please apply online using our online application system. Once you set up your account, you can complete the application.

Letters of Recommendation

Three letters of reference on official letterhead stationery are required from research supervisors, faculty instructors and/or advisors. Once you submit your application, an email will be sent to your recommenders. They will be added to your application once they are received.


The list of courses taken and grades received must be presented. International transcripts also need a copy in English. Indian students must furnish detailed marks sheets for each degree. Once received, they will be scanned and added to your application. WE CANNOT ACCEPT ELECTRONIC COPIES OR PHOTOCOPIES!

Graduate Record Examinations (GRE)

The Department of Chemistry requires the General Test scores from all international applicants. You can attach an electronic copy of your score to the application. You may be able to access your scores on line. Please visit for more information.

English Language Test

Non-citizens must take either the TOEFL or IELTS examinations; information about IELTS is available at The department HIGHLY RECOMMENDS taking the iBT. You can attach an electronic copy of your score to the application. If you took the iBT, you can get a copy of your scores by logging into the ETS web page at and following the links to the TOEFL page.
