Future work of the Meyer group focuses on the high-temperature synthesis, under vigorously inert conditions, of (heterometallic) metal-rich halides and polar intermetallics, especially of transition and rare-earth metals. Compounds are analyzed and characterized by powder and single-crystal X-ray diffraction as well as thermal analysis. Physical properties of high-purity samples are measured, most importantly magnetic susceptibility. Band structure calculations are carried out to learn about the electronic structures and their interdependence with physical properties. This knowledge is then used to design new polar intermetallic compounds.
